WESTFIELD - John M. Cunningham, age 69, of McKinley Rd., Westfield, passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2015 at his home following a courageous battle with Cancer.
John was born on January 19, 1946 in Salamanca, NY, a son of Eleanor (Burroughs) Cunningham of Westfield and the late Allen Cunningham.
He served in the US Army at Fort Hood, Texas during the Vietnam War from 1965 until 1967.
An automotive Mechanic and Technician for over 40 years, John started his career with Pete Clancy when he was a teenager and finished as a self employed Auto Mechanic at his home. In between, and over the years, John had worked for numerous area dealerships, where he enjoyed meeting and making many new friends, some as coworkers and others as customers. John loved Drag Racing, both as a driver and observer. He also loved his Wednesday Night League Bowling, where he had many great times and a lot of laughs with the guys for over 40 years. John was a 44 year member of the Westfield Moose Lodge.
Besides his mother, Eleanor, John is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sandra (Slate) Cunningham, whom he married on April 20 1968 in Westfield, and by his daughter: Lynlee (Mike Rowan) Cunningham and by his son, John (Rachael) Cunningham all of Westfield, NY. John was the very proud grandfather of: Philip, Kaitlin and Kyle Cunningham. He is further survived by his three brothers: Ronald (Alice) Cunningham of Portland, NY, Thomas (Patty) Cunningham of Ripley, NY, and James (Renee) Cunningham of Westfield, NY, and by his two Brother In Laws, Tim (Sue) Slate of Fredonia, NY and Ed Slate of Westfield, NY. Many Nieces and Nephews also survive.
Friends may call on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 from 2-4PM and 6-8 PM at the MASON Funeral Home, 37 Clinton Street, Westfield, NY, and are invited to attend the Funeral Services There on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at 11AM with Fr. Joseph Walter officiating. Private burial will be in Portland Evergreen Cemetery.
John's family strongly suggests that memorials be made to Hospice of Chautauqua County, 20 West Fairmont Avenue, Lakewood, NY 14750.
