my deepest sympathies to the entire Portman family. My parents Ken and Dorothy were best of friends with Andy and Mary! Also the Mascaro's, Bennet's, Ross's, Waite's, Mathews and others! What great times they all had together! Kind of like watching a 50's-60's family TV show! All of the kids were best friends also. Many of us worked for Andy in the grapes, corn and tomatoes! Some of our best memories involved building Pinehurst golf course. Andy worked from sunup to sundown every day, he expected the same from us! The golf course came to being and we all enjoyed playing 9 whenever we could! In his later years at their new home Andy loved to sit in the sun and watch all the folks play 6,7and 8! A very challenging group of three holes! The Pinehurst "Amen Corner" ! Although it won't be the same without Andy I'm sure he will look down with tremendous pride and smile as everyone continues to enjoy Pinehurst ! Thank you Andy, RIP our friend and mentor!
